Ornaments of Paradise, 2008, Cast Concrete, Steel

Ornaments of Paradise is an outdoor sculpture installation that accentuates a dichotomous relationship between people and nature.  The cast concrete sea turtles are indebted in form and material to kitschy lawn ornamentation that caricaturizes natural things like frogs, birds or deer.  The cutesyness of average lawn ornaments is replaced by mega brand logos so as to use the suburban lawn as a forum to discuss social issues like habitat loss for wildlife, pollution and the insistence of corporate marketing everywhere. Thanks to the Vermont Community Foundation for helping support the creation of this sculpture.
